Discipleship – Jesus Never Said It Would Be Easy!

February 22, 2016

…If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.”  (Mark 8:34).  Not only is it true that we don’t have a right to live by our desires, but on an even more fundamental level it is also true we do not have a right  to live by any personal ambitions or pursuits.  As followers of Jesus we surrender all these things to Him!  This requires a daily surrender of self for our walk with Jesus.  We must disabuse ourselves of the notion that the Christian life is easy – that we will not struggle, that we will not have to resist temptation, etc.  Jesus has promised us that the Christian life will be a struggle!  Overcoming sin is a struggle and daily surrender to the will of God.  Yet, as counterintuitive as this may seem to us, this is also where some of the great joys and blessings are to be found.  Again, Jesus said, “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, shall receive many times  as much, and shall inherit eternal life.  But many who are first will be last; and the last shall be first.” (Matthew 19:29)
